What is a Cronut™?

Described by many as a half croissant, half doughnut — this pastry hybrid by Chef Dominique Ansel is taking the world by storm. After its launch on May 10, 2013, Cronut fans spanned the world from Berlin to Singapore, making it the most viral dessert item to date.

The introduction of the Cronut™ has spawned many copycats all around the world. To consumers who are not able to try the original cronut from New York City, fret not – your local bakeries may be trying to re-create the same thing! If you stay in Singapore or Malaysia, you’re in luck as we are telling you where to find them in your very own hometowns!

In Singapore, we have:

The Crodo by Da Paolo Gastronomia , may appear like a donut, is made from croissant dough which is deep-fried then cream filled and finished with a sweet glaze. Donut fans can now enjoy a donut with the luscious texture of a croissant while Croissant lovers can enjoy the same light fluffy delicate layers of the Croissant paired adventurously with the sweet fried sugared delights of the Donut.

The Ranting Panda

The Place Beer and German food seem to be synonymous with Brotzeit, which is probably one of the most popular chill-lax restaurants among Singaporeans and likewise foreigners. Best of Singapore – The Chilli Crab

4

Every Singaporean knows the popularity of the Chilli Crab within the country. It is not just an ordinary dish – it is considered a national dish Singaporeans are proud of and is a must try for foreigners visiting the country.

“The red-tangy sauce is made deliciously fragrant with light flavourings of garlic and rice vinegar, while thickening flour and egg ribbons (produced by adding beaten eggs towards the end of the cooking process) give the chilli crab dish the fluffy texture it’s known for.” – YourSingapore.com

The origin of the famous Chilli Crab dates back to the year 1956 and was founded by seafood restaurant owner Mr Lim Choon Ngee and his beloved wife Mdm Cher Yam Tian. At that time, seafood were all cooked using open charcoal fire. Chilli Crab was then created and later became famous through patrons’ recommendations.

Today, the Chilli Crab is served in many seafood restaurants throughout the country. Jumbo Seafood Restaurant is a household name which is very popular for the famous dish. Other restaurants which are also popular for the dish are No Signboard Seafood Restaurant and Long Beach Seafood Restaurant. So what are you waiting for? Have your Chilli Crab fix now!
